Somewhere near where folk and jazz collide sits Polly Paulusma. She has a voice capable of some unexpected twists, a knack for playing a cupboard full of instruments, and an English degree from Cambridge. The latter, though, can lure her into some over-elaborate word games. Echoes of Nick Drake and John Martyn hint at where Paulusma is coming from, though both of them would wince at the twinkly feyness she can lapse into. The best moments are when she lets a little rage into her voice and forces it to splinter at the edges, as she does in One Day, while the more muscular beat of Give It Back is a welcome change from the trite folkisms on display elsewhere.
