McFly, Room on the Third Floor

McFly

McFly come from the management that gave us Busted, resulting, predictably, in two singles that vaulted straight to number one. Beyond this irritating leg-up, and the fact that the foursome's combined age is a whopping 68, there's a case to be made for taking them seriously. This largely self-written album isn't easily dismissable as Diet Busted; with its coordinates fixed on Merseybeat and a touch of Beach Boys, it's not your average boy-band product.

Non-teenagers will be tickled by the lyrics, with their agonised accounts of trying to woo older women of 19 ("She's got a boyfriend/ He drives me round the bend/ Cos he's 23/ He's in the Marines"), but the blissed-out harmonies and propulsive guitars stand on their own merits. That Girl is the best of several tracks to encapsulate surf-pop optimism, while Not Alone, sung by Danny Jones, raspily encroaches on Keane territory. Definitely not the new Westlife.
