This Thing of Ours review – R&B’s Rainy Milo proves wise beyond her years

New London R&B star Rainy Milo recalls both MIA and Lily Allen on her jazz-infused debut, writes Nadia Khomami

Since Rainy Milo's single 'Bout You was picked up by Gilles Peterson for his Brownswood Bubblers compilation series, the 18-year-old south-east Londoner has shot from Tumblr dreamer to the top of many a one-to-watch list. Her debut album builds on 'Bout You's dreamy cocktail of pop and R&B. Sultry vocals over jazz-infused hip-hop beats recall the wit of Lily Allen, the sincerity of Corinne Bailey Rae and the panache of MIA. Recent single Rats is filled with a distinctly British realism, and I Miss You will pull on every teenage heartstring. Though the songs can feel homogeneous, Milo's maturity should bring her success.
