From Every Sphere by Ed Harcourt

If it's virtually impossible to become a unique pop genius nowadays, the next best thing is to concoct your own magical-realist vision by stealing from the best. Thus Harcourt dips his beak into Brian Wilson (Jetsetter sounds like one of those long-lost Wilson pop symphonies), Sgt Pepper-era Beatles, some Beck, some Waits, even some Divine Comedy (from when they were good). He likes to get surreal with samples, marching-band percussion or cracked brass bands, but he can't resist the lure of old-fashioned mainstream pop either, as in Fireflies Take Flight and All of Your Days Will Be Blessed. All this, and he even managed to survive the curse of a Mercury music prize nomination. Watch this boy fly.
