Red Snapper: Red Snapper

More Pop CD reviews

It was only last year that Red Snapper declared that they had called it a day, but suddenly here they are with the follow-up to 2000's We Aim to Satisfy.

Each of the Snapper trio has been investigating different musical avenues, and maybe their extra-curricular experiences have helped to fuel the new disc's reflective and faintly sinister aura. Ali B's grainy, sinuous basslines frequently provide the musical spine, draping minor-key melancholy across Mountains and Valleys or powering purposefully through the middle of the live take of The Tunnel. They have a lot of fun juxtaposing textures and leaping around the musical globe, suddenly going flamenco-crazy in Odd Man Out, with its Spanish guitar and booming bass drum. Alluring, though it could use more substance to go with its style.
