Spanish music, like that of France, has been invigorated by the sounds drifting in from north Africa, and down in the city of Cadiz the guitarist Javier Ruibal has been taking note. A gutsy singer-songwriter and virtuoso guitarist strongly influenced by flamenco, he has set out - like that other great Spanish band Radio Tarifa - to match Spanish styles with those from the Arabic world and beyond.

But while this is his starting point, flamenco and north Africa are just two of the influences in his passionate and melodic songs. There is a hefty dash of Latin America here, along with jazz and even an unlikely burst of Erik Satie. Ruibal's rousing vocals and furious guitar playing are matched by fine Spanish guitar and Arabic lute work from his sidekick Tito Alcedo, along with anything from piano to brass and the occasional (less crucial) string arrangements.
