Frustratingly inconsistent they maybe, but Staten Island's Wu-Tang Clan are quite rightly considered hip-hop royalty. In 1993, the nine-piece crew subverted a stagnating form with their debut, Enter the Wu (36 Chambers). Producer RZA's poignant piano loops and soul samples, paired with the martial art metaphors of Method Man et al established a menacing musicality that was to be much imitated throughout the 1990s. But the three albums that followed were lacklustre and live they've always managed to disappoint - cancelling shows at the last minute or turning up late with less than half of the Clan in tow.

In this gig, the sound is fairly dire and ODB and Method are noticeable by their absence. Still, star players Raekwon, RZA, GZA, Ghostface Killah and numerous others nearly make up for their missing members. The discordant opening bars of C.R.E.A.M barely sneak from the speakers before hands, heads and feet fly - off and onstage. Rabble-rousers Protect Ya Neck and Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F' Wit, further prove that the Wu's battle-ready beats have more than stood the test of time. Additionally, short solo sessions reaffirm the talent that has crept from the Clan - from Cappadonna's captivating a capellas to Ghostface's incessant energy. The Wu stand as strong apart as they do together.

Whether giving out sweets from Tesco carrier bags - "Don't say we didn't break bread wit' you motherfuckers" - or experimenting with complicated crowd participation techniques, the Wu, in all their shambolic glory, are a joy to watch. They may never recapture their creativity as a crew, but they have much to be proud of. "Wu-Tang for motherfuckin' ever," rasps RZA before departing the stage. In one way or another they undoubtedly will be.
