Mbila Bel, Belissimo

Belissimo

A welcome return by one of the great divas of African music. Mbila Bel made her name in the early 80s, singing in the band of the great Tabu Ley Rochereau, back when Tabu Ley was one of the major forces in Congolese music. Both in her duets with the band leader and her subsequent solo career, she was famous for her light, fresh vocals, and her style remains charmingly and almost startlingly unchanged. There are sections in which she veers towards gospel, pop, or the African R&B of Ambiance a Gogo, but the best songs echo the classic, lilting Congolese dance styles, with her gently distinctive voice matched against the guitar work of Souzy Kasseya, who wrote much of the best new material. It may be 20 years now since her glory days but she is still one of the great African voices.
