Dinosaur Jnr
Forum, London NW5
First, the Pixies reformed and now Dinosaur Jr, which means more moshing down the front for indie fans of a certain age. The original Dinosaur line-up split in 1989, with bassist Lou Barlow forming Sebadoah and, while the group continued, they never recaptured the heights of their first three albums, in particular You're Living All Over Me, the true grunge/slacker classic that Nirvana's Nevermind aspired to be.
Given that singer/guitarist J Mascis gave the impression of being a poster-boy for narcolepsy, it was astonishing to see the trio, completed by drummer Murph, get it together again.
Gratifyingly, Mascis's hair still reaches to his waist, and he is still capable of unleashing a ferocious blizzard of noise from his guitar. It started slowly, but a cracking 'Raisans' and an awesome take on 'The Lung' led to the inevitable climax of 'Freak Scene'. In the months ahead, Mudhoney are playing their classic Superfuzz Bigmuff; at least there's time to let a persistent ringing in the ears subside before then.
