The Wigmore Hall is the latest organisation to launch its own CD label, and this fine Nash Ensemble disc is one of a series of live recordings of chamber concerts and song recitals made earlier this year. The chief glory here is the performance of Mendelssohn's Octet, the work that put the composer on the map at the age of 16. It's a turbulent, fiery account of the piece that both takes into consideration Mendelssohn's demands that it should be played symphonically and also refutes the argument that his music only ever achieves a kind of uninvolving perfection.

In comparison, Beethoven's Clarinet Trio emerges as the slighter work, despite its profoundly affecting slow movement. It's done with great charm and suavity, however, and there is some beguiling playing from clarinettist Richard Hosford.
