Entitled "The Other Mozart", Barbara Bonney's latest recital consists of songs by Wolfgang Amadeus's youngest son, Franz Xavier. Born in 1791, shortly before his father's death, Mozart Jr was, it would seem, pushed early into a musical career by his mother to keep the family name before the public. He was, by all accounts, a fine pianist, but as a composer was far from being a genius. Stylistically he is closer to Schubert than his father.

A long gothic ballad entitled Romanze reveals a certain dramatic flair, and there's a curious setting of a poem by Jean-Jacques Rousseau that cultivates plenty of "sensibilité" through an exaggeratedly chromatic accompaniment. Bonney sings with her usual charm - if with an occasional hint of strain in her upper registers - but the real problem here is that too much of the music is simply dull.
