As crossover albums go, this is better than most. It forms Roberto Alagna's tribute to one of his heroes, the tenor Luis Mariano, star of films, musicals and operettas, and a hugely popular singer of standards in 1950s France. In the sleeve notes, Alagna remembers being first fascinated by Mariano's voice when he saw one of his films on TV, aged 10. The disc is saved from sentimentality by the enthusiasm and sincerity Alagna brings to it, though his voice occasionally sounds raw at the top, and there are engaging performances of such familiar numbers as Mexico and I Love Paris in the Springtime.
