New Morning

The fashion-crazy King of the Congolese Rhumba is back in style. Papa Wemba has had a difficult time in recent years, becoming known not just for his music or for leading the sapeurs (the unlikely Congolese movement obsessed by expensive designer clothes), but for his criminal activities. He was jailed in France for smuggling illegal immigrants into the country as fake members of his band, and as a result was refused a visa to the UK last year. Which is unfortunate, as he still has one of the finest, most distinctive voices in Africa, as shown by this new live set.

He starts unaccompanied, and is then joined by a small band, dominated by the piano, for an exquisite reworking of his best-known songs (including a tribute to Otis Redding). A DVD is included to show what he was wearing: spotted trousers and an exotic black hat.
