Puerto Muerto, Songs of Muerto County Revisited

(Fire)

Marriages come in all shapes and sizes. That of Christa Meyer and Tim Kelley finds full expression in their band, Puerto Muerto, in which they pursue ersatz interests such as throwing together new soundtracks to horror films, and writing song cycles about incest. The first CD in this two-CD set reimagines The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as a gothic Weimar delicacy, full of sinister violins, ghostly harmonicas and the tangling, spooky vocals of Meyer and Kelley singing romantic goodbyes to the dead. CD two is an introduction to the band's other recordings, to the Edith Piaf-apeing San Pedro, an elegy for Blood Red Wine, and a terrifying reworking of the Kinks' Alcohol. Imagine Kurt Weill, the Bad Seeds and Arcade Fire slitting each other's throats and letting their blood mingle, and these are the weird, wonderful results.
