Masaki Batoh has been leading Ghost since 1984 - out from their subterranean, psychedelic headquarters in a disused Tokyo subway station, as legend would have it - making wild, flighty experimental rock with leanings towards far-out folk. It's all there on this aptly titled 19th album. Centrepiece track Hemicyclic Anthelion is given over to pure improv - a full 28 minutes of fractious, abstract sound-war that is only intermittently compelling. Much better are the songs that follow: luridly bombastic, timpani-led marches that sound like an angry Trooping the Colour. A cover song, Caledonia, by pre-industrial noise freaks Cromagnon, sounds equally battle-ready. Things calm with folky closer Grisaille, vaguely medieval and very lovely, but it's conflict and viscera that rule here. Masaki-san and his little army sound fighting fit.
