This time last year, Athena Andreadis released an EP that presented an intriguing mixture of breathy, personal songs sung in English, and traditional Greek material (she was brought up living in both countries). Her first full-length CD has been awaited with some interest - she has, after all, attracted enormous attention from influential devotees in the folk/world music establishment - but it turns out to be something of an oddity, an impressive disappointment. It's impressive because she is a clearly a fine songwriter with a good ear for melody, with a whole batch of mostly slow, pained and confessional love songs to her credit. But it's disappointing because of the lack of variety, with everything sung in English, and no sign of the easy-going Greek dances that enliven her concerts. Good as the songs may be, her pained, gently dramatic confessions begin to sound wearing by the end of the set.
