CocoRosie

Shepherds Bush Empire, London

Perennially curious CocoRosie have dived back into the dressing-up box for another unsettling incarnation. Opera-trained Sierra Casady is a Callas-inspired vision of femininity in a long, black dress. Younger sibling Bianca is clad in a Victorian soldier's uniform, bringing to life the Pierre & Gilles-styled tableau of their latest album, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn.

The half-Cherokee Casady sisters have been exploring identity since their 2003 debut La Maison de Mon Rêve. Their sound evolved from Parisian blues to the freak-folk on 2005's Noah's Ark, and now they have put their mystical tales to hip-hop beats and reggae rhythms adorned by cot toy tunes and blasts from plastic ray guns.

One of the gaggle of little girl voices that includes Emiliana Torrini and Joanna Newsom, Bianca bounces into life on Houses, as frozen in time as the photos of the sisters in fancy dress and with painted faces projected behind her. Sierra aches with maturity and grace, but dances like an excitable child.

Gliding through their three albums, CocoRosie offer their bewitched audience a glimpse into their fairytale world, inhabited by fallen angels, beautiful boys and sunshine. But they never invite us in, ignoring the awkward silence that falls between songs as Sierra swaps between piano, harp, acoustic guitar and keyboards, communicating only through their music.

And, like all good fairytales, there is a brutal coldness to CocoRosie's songs that is even more striking on stage. Bianca adds to the fearful sexuality of Werewolf by chanting: "You want to fuck me." Sierra stands on a chair to sing the Star-Spangled Banner, footage of war-mutilated children flickering behind her.

But there is no denying the warmth between the Casadys. Estranged for a decade, the success of their fruitful reunion is sealed when, after following Bianca's seductive Turn Me On, her big sister gives her kiss.
