Review: Tokyo Police Club

7 out of 10: While some may dismiss them as just another generic guitar band, TPC have the talent and memorable tunes to set them apart.

Stage: Carling, Reading

Time: Saturday, 5.30pm

Dress code: Classic indie uniform - skinny fit T-shirts, scuffed up Converse and messy hair.

In summary: Youthful and enthusiastic, Tokyo Police Club produce infectious indie rock. But while some may dismiss them as just another generic guitar band, TPC have the talent and memorable tunes to set them apart. Synth keyboards and tambourines a-plenty give their songs an edge. Chanted choruses pepper their songs, encouraging crowd participation. Their rhythm section is exceptionally tight, aided today by handclaps courtesy of their adoring fans. It's refreshing and inspiring seeing this new band giving their all, beating their tambourines so hard it seems painful. The slower songs risk becoming a tad forgettable, though; their real strength lying with furious tracks like Nature of the Experiment.

Highlight: Your English is Good - joyously uplifting, the sort of anthem that will soundtrack festival memories in the coming dark winter months.

Talking point: After years of Celine Dion and Nickelback, Canada has turned a sharp corner when it comes to producing good music. Aside from Tokyo Police Club, Arcade Fire and Hot Hot Heat are on later today, while Crystal Castles was on earlier - all bands to be firmly proud of.

Better than: An onstage battle between Tokyo police and Japanese samurai. Although that would be pretty cool too.

Worse than: Their London show earlier this week.

What they'll be up to this time next year: Hard to say with such a breaking band, but looking at their growing fan base, they'll hopefully be playing more festival bills next year but in less dingy tents.

Mark out of 10: 7
