Rilo Kiley, Under the Blacklight

Sugar-coated songcraft from the Californian four-piece.

Fans of the LA indie darlings were all a-quiver - and not in a good way - when 'The Moneymaker', the first single from Blacklight was unleashed. A stripped-down, groove-heavy ditty about pervy sexual tastes, it came across like a funkified Fleetwood Mac. The remainder of their fourth album, however, has a familiar Midwestern chug, and is a gorgeous confection of girl-group soft rock and country-tinged balladeering. Singer Jenny Lewis's voice is a nimble, syrupy instrument, telling candid tales of moral back-sliding and heartbreak.
