Baltimore trio Celebration's second album is a modern take on the classic era of 4AD, when the label's albums came housed in wonderfully arty sleeves and contained bafflingly obtuse but often brilliant music. Within the Modern Tribe's kaleidoscopic artwork, echoes of the Cocteau Twins-led 4AD of old happily coexist with guests Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the entire lineup of TV On the Radio, whose David Sitke also produces. The songs are similarly collisions of tribal rhythms, Mellotrons and GuitarOrgan with Katrina Ford's swooping, gender-bending vocals fronting music that veers between soul and art rock. Occasionally, there's a sense that too much is going on - melodies are sometimes buried in the clutter. However, drummer David Bergander's unconventional beats and Pony and Heartbreak's excellent ascending, euphoric choruses suggest that, with sharper arrangements, Celebration could provide a robust challenge to the Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire.
