Take That: The Circus

This is a pretty anaemic procession of soft rock clichés, with big choruses and bigger platitudes, says Ally Carnwath

Nineties nostalgia has a limited shelf life, so for all the chart success of their 2006 comeback album, this record will provide the true test of Take That Mk II's longevity. Its commercial prospects seem bright; the band's anthemic piano-led pop has been the most bankable sound of the past decade and 'The Garden' and 'How Did It Come To This' sound like a knock-off Coldplay, unencumbered by Brian Eno swooshes. But overall this is a pretty anaemic procession of soft rock clichés, with big choruses and bigger platitudes.
