Various artists, Jackie: The Album, volume two

A compilation of hits from the days when 'tranny' meant 'radio'

Despite having closed in 1993, Jackie magazine - which sold 1m copies a week at its 1970s peak - lives on in the form of this series, which compiles hits from the days when "tranny" meant "radio". The first, released last Christmas, sold 400,000 so here, inevitably, is the 70-track sequel. It suffers a bit from the fact that the first volume laid claim to the best songs; quite a few tracks here are big stars' second-tier hits, such as Wings' Listen to What the Man Said and Gilbert O'Sullivan's No Matter How I Try. And it's odd that this is a 70s compilation that fails to reference punk - or even new wave - in any way. That said, it does a good job of counterweighting teeny gloop such as Donny Osmond's Young Love with cooler pop such as the Sweet's Ballroom Blitz and Roxy Music's Love Is the Drug.
