Ian King: Panic Grass and Fever Few

Ian King's world music updates on old folk ballads are a daring raid on tradition, says Neil Spencer

Updating antique ballads like "Flash Company" and "Adieu to Old England" to reggae arrangements will likely bring the wrath of the folk police on the head of King, a Yorkshire dry-stone waller with a passion for world music. He and producer Adrian Sherwood play their hand cannily on this debut, however. King sings the old tales, and verse by the likes of John Gay, in an easy, unaffected style, while horns swirl, dub effects shimmer and Skip McDonald adds bluesy guitar flourishes. Alongside bold statements like the intense, Navajo style "Old Miner" come sweet, lower-key pieces such as "Jovial Broom Man". A daring raid on tradition.
