L'Arpeggiata's mix of 17th-century Italian sacred music and Corsican folk songs is truly classy, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Concept discs uniting early music with folk music can be suspect, but this one is very classy. It's loosely based around the Passion story: Christina Pluhar's ensemble revive 17th-century Italian sacred music, sung by Nuria Rial and the countertenor of the moment, Philippe Jaroussky: their duetting in Legrenzi is sublime, and her Stabat mater by Sances a remarkable find. Interwoven are earthy Corsican folk songs from the group Barbara Furtuna plus one modern piece, with dazzling violin music from Biber to Cazzati, accompanied with plucky verve by L'Arpeggiata. Too many of the pieces are ground basses and chaconnes, but Pluhar's arrangements are stylishly varied.
