Pulled Apart By Horses: Pulled Apart By Horses

It's stupid, it's noisy, it's brisk – and the puns are terrible. But there's much to love in Pulled Apart By Horses' debut, reckons Will Dean

There's no such thing as a bad pun, a mantra Leeds-based hardcore scamps Pulled Apart By Horses seemingly share. The first track on their eagerly awaited debut features the gonzo song title Back to the Fuck Yeah, but you can't imagine Marty McFly daring to drop one of PABH's tunes at a 50s school dance. The remnants of four other Leeds acts, the band creates stentorian guitar music over which vocalist Tom Hudson yelps lines as daft as, "Awesome, radical, awesome ... totally bodacious!" But it works, even during the relentless Yeah Buddy, there's a sweaty charm. There's no messing about – almost everything is under three-and-a-half minutes, and there's the brilliant High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive, which combines a verse and chorus set in different time signatures. The track should sound amateurish, but is – like the rest of this rip-snorting debut – brutal, noisy, fun.
