Chromeo: Business Casual

Montreal's answer to Hot Chip are still rooted in the 80s, says Kitty Empire

Chromeo's last album, 2007's Fancy Footwork, was an unlikely grower. Slavish in its idolatry of 80s funk-pop, it was both spectacularly garish and fiendishly clever, rebooting the most revived and reviled arena of pop with love. Were Montrealers Dave 1 and P-Thugg kidding? It seems not. Their third outing refines the Chromeo formula, deploying Thriller-era keyboards and other outmoded gadgetry on songs that never cease to nag. "J'ai claqué la porte" even finds them singing in French, like Hot Chip on a cultural exchange.
