Timber Timbre: Timber Timbre

Songwriter Taylor Kirk's honeyed croon takes you through a world of seances and shallow graves, says Ally Carnwath

Named after the sound of the log cabin studio where songwriter Taylor Kirk made his earliest recordings, this Canadian threepiece produce country and blues-indebted songs with a strong feel of the wilderness. But rather than the consoling isolation that Bon Iver found in the backwoods, Kirk channels the strangeness and unease into a world of seances and shallow graves with only his honeyed croon for company. There are times when he lays on the gothic country a bit thick but these are outnumbered by moments of black humour and spectral beauty.
