Buxtehude: Scandinavian Cantatas – review

Peter Hillier and his Theatre of Voices breathe new life into Buxtehude's neglected 17th-century repertoire, writes Stephen Pritchard

The celebrated organist Dietrich Buxtehude never had a job that required him to write for singers, but he none the less composed more than 120 vocal pieces, some, as in this unusual selection in Swedish and Latin, of the very highest quality. Paul Hillier and his Theatre of Voices have built a fine reputation singing Stockhausen, Pärt, Adams and Reich, but here breathe new life into this stimulating but neglected 17th-century repertoire, aided by the splendidly crisp TOV band. Soprano Else Torp, countertenor William Purefoy and bass Jakob Bloch Jespersen shine among the singers. Highly recommended.
