Julia Stone: The Memory Machine – review

Julia Stone struggles without the counterweight of brother Angus on this solo affair, says Ally Carnwath

Fans of Julia Stone's work with her brother, Angus, may question the wisdom of this solo album. Their double act benefits from a system of sibling checks and balances, her breathy, faux-naive style offset by his laidback drawl, but here, she can indulge her more fanciful impulses without little brother spoiling her fun. If you scrunch up your ears, it's pretty enough; "This Love" and "My Baby" summon the hushed intimacy of Hope Sandoval. But whatever mood her compositions achieve is soon nobbled by the grating effect of her ickle-girl vocals and twee lyrics.
