Handel: Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno: Early Opera Company/ Christian Curnyn – review

Christian Curnyn's direction and excellent singing mean this early Handel oratorio cannot fail to charm, writes Stephen Pritchard

Anyone who heard Christian Curnyn's keyboard direction of this early Handel oratorio in Netia Jones's delightful staging at Wilton's Music Hall in London four years ago will welcome this live recording of the Early Opera Company at Wigmore Hall. Curnyn's choice of tempi and his measured use of embellishment allow Handel's glorious score to speak for itself without unnecessary ornamentation or flashy vocal display. Lucy Crowe is in thrilling form as Beauty; Andrew Staples delights as Tempo; rich-toned Hilary Summers is authoritative as Disinganno and Anna Stephany, as Piacere, brings a special warmth to the signature aria "Lascia la spina".
