Todd Snider: Live – The Storyteller – review

Todd Snider's live collection showcases his great, rambling monologues, writes Neil Spencer

Little known here, Snider is celebrated in the US for his witty, satirical snapshots of American life. This double live CD reprises material from his recent output, East Nashville Skyline and Just Like Old Times included, while showcasing Snider's skills as a rascally raconteur in the tradition of talking-blues-era Dylan. The monologues are mostly autobiographical – Snider's conversion from college jock to "one of the burnouts from the smoke pit" is typically droll – but their hinterland is a country of second-rate country bands, hookers, Nascar nuts and suicidal wage slaves. Musically underplayed, it's a great, rambling comedy album.
