Joe Lovano Us Five: Bird Songs – review

Dave Gelly enjoys an collection of Charlie Parker covers with a twist

Joe Lovano plays tenor saxophone and Charlie Parker played alto. The two instruments have totally different voices and personalities. That's what makes this album so fascinating, because Lovano takes Parker's convoluted, distinctively alto tunes and reshapes them from the tenor's perspective. There's more air around the notes and space around the phrases. Even on the notoriously frantic "Donna Lee", nervous tension gives way to smiling ease. Lovano's band, Us Five, take the point well, cooling the harmonic and rhythmic temperature. A most engrossing and enjoyable set.
