Warren Vaché, Alan Barnes: The London Session – review

Classic songs are reworked with aplomb on an album brimming with musical talent, writes Dave Gelly

It's new, imaginative treatment that keeps old tunes alive, and this album provides 10 perfect examples. Vaché is a great cornet player with a quicksilver musical mind, and Barnes, a master saxophonist, has a magic touch when it comes to orchestrating for small ensembles. Surrounded by his settings of songs such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Sophisticated Lady", Vaché's tone takes on a golden glow. Furthermore, with saxophonist Andy Panayi and trombonist Mark Nightingale completing the front line, and a rhythm section of John Pearce, Andrew Cleyndert and Bobby Worth, this is the mainstream A-team with a vengeance.
