Wu Lyf: Go Tell Fire to the Mountain – review

Wu Lyf's hypno-pop debut combines apocalyptic versifying with approachable anthems, says Kitty Empire

It's not every day you come across a homegrown band whose coded pronouncements combine elements of hip-hop ghetto-speak, Godspeed You! Black Emperor's apocalyptic versifying and the agit-pop righteousness of MIA. Over a year in the rumouring, their debut finds these mysterious Mancunians offering a fleshed-out version of their first online offerings. Effusive and engaging, Go Tell is a rush of post-Animal Collective hypno-pop, given urgency by singer Ellery Roberts's raw tones, and lent weight by organs and African-derived guitars. Behind their veneer of unapproachability, though, Wu Lyf peddle some quite unabashed anthemics. "We Bros" has the kind of space in it that Kings of Leon use to remunerating effect.
