The New Gary Burton Quartet: Common Ground – review

The impeccable vibraphone of Gary Burton cannot fail to please in this recording by the latest of his quartets, writes Dave Gelly

Gary Burton's music can be guaranteed to take you on an absorbing journey, regardless of the company he keeps – or even no company at all, as his solo recordings prove. Maybe it's the way they blend, but the sound of a guitar alongside his vibraphone always brings out something special. In this case the guitarist is Julian Lage, a brilliant player whose improvisations can be quite tricky but never obscure, and whose cool, ringing tone chimes perfectly. Bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez complete the latest in a long and unbroken line of immaculate Burton quartets.
