Best of Salvatore Licitra – review

The much-missed tenor is celebrated in this vibrant two-disc set, writes Fiona Maddocks

The Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra, held in much affection by the opera world, died after a motorbike accident last September at the age of 43. This two-CD set in his memory consists of 38 tracks, including "Nessun dorma", from the Italian repertoire in which he excelled. He shot to fame in 2002 when he replaced Pavarotti in Puccini's Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Hear him here in arias from Verdi, Puccini and, for Licitra, less obvious fare: Bach, Fauré and Golijov. The occasional slips reflect a voice which, if not always perfect in control, was always alive with emotional intensity. His final recordings, poignant in their exuberance, include "Funiculi, Funiculà" and "O sole mio".
