Jim Mullen Quartet: String Theory – review

Jim Mullen's unique mellow guitar sound spins an effortless stream of melody, writes Dave Gelly

If you know current British jazz you will know Jim Mullen's playing. He's been around for quite a while and records regularly. But that's no reason to take him for granted. With his unique mellow guitar sound (the result of using his thumb instead of a plectrum) and his ability to spin a seemingly effortless stream of melody, he never fails to keep your ears fully occupied. This set, a reunion with his old sparring partners Gareth Williams, Mick Hutton and Gary Husband, on piano, bass and drums, features nine pieces, ranging from Thelonious Monk to John Lennon, packed with invention.
