Ronnie Scott’s All-Stars: Jazz Classics – review

A live set by the jazz club's tireless house band underscores their qualities, writes Dave Gelly

Jazz aficionados have been known to take issue with the choice of big names appearing at the club, but one thing can always be relied on – the house trio led by pianist James Pearson. How they sustain such full-on brilliance night after night is a mystery and their guest artists are an unfailing delight, too. In this case, the trio are joined by two of Britain's most impressive young jazz performers - vocalist Natalie Williams and tenor saxophonist Alex Garnett. Spirited, resourceful and vastly accomplished, it's a great set and, being recorded live, as real as it gets.
