Beethoven: Complete Piano Trios – review

Trio Wanderer 's four-disc set of Beethoven's 12 piano trios is a winner, writes Fiona Maddocks

A general knowledge of Beethoven's piano trios tends to stop at the two most famous, the "Ghost" Op 70 No 1, and the "Archduke" Op 97 No 1. Yet he wrote a dozen and even the early Op 1 examples, not least because of the composer's own virtuosity as a pianist, pushed the form forward. This four-disc set, released to celebrate the Trio Wanderer's 25th anniversary, is of a consistently high quality, with close attention to dynamics, sensitive balance between instruments and keen rhythmic energy. Most accounts of the "Archduke" are more grandiose and romantic. Yet this lean, playful account offers a convincing and lyrical alternative.
