Daniel Herskedal & Marius Neset: Neck of the Woods – review

Tenor sax and tuba make for a surprisingly haunting double act, writes Dave Gelly

We know what to expect by now from contemporary Scandinavian musicians, the restraint and lyrical melancholy, but you would hardly expect it from a duo of tenor saxophone and tuba – even with occasional help from a small choir. Yet these two young Norwegian virtuosi make haunting, almost unearthly music together. The question of whether it counts as jazz doesn't really arise, since it doesn't count as anything else, and it seems to take people from a jazz background to invent and play it. I'd say that if you enjoyed John Surman's latest album, you will certainly enjoy this.
