Lucy Rose: Like I Used To – review

Lucy Rose's folky inflections put her firmly in Laura Marling territory, writes Ally Carnwath

For all the homely touches of Lucy Rose's backstory – an open-mic-night apprenticeship, selling jam at her gigs – she clearly has her sights set higher than early-afternoon slots at Green Man festival.

Videos for her early singles are approaching a million YouTube views, and underwriting the winsome folky inflections are the signifiers of a more radio-friendly pop sound: cosseting electronic washes on Watch Over, sleek, MOR-ish guitar grooves on Place. The results are consistently pleasant if undemanding; her lilting vocals bear obvious comparison with Laura Marling, but without the same lyrical depth.
