Tame Impala: Lonerism – review

For all the psychedelic soundscapes, Aussie three-piece Tame Impala have retained their knack for a good tune on their second album, writes Phil Mongredien

Australian three-piece Tame Impala's 2010 debut, Innerspeaker, was a masterclass in making shamelessly retro-leaning sounds seem utterly of the moment. The follow-up, produced by Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann, takes that record's intoxicating reimagining of psychedelia and bathes it in warm synth sweeps, plotting an ambitious course between MGMT and the Sleepy Jackson (fellow Aussie Luke Steele's old band) in the process. The results might be frequently overblown but, crucially, beneath all the dazzling soundscapes songwriter Kevin Parker never forgets the power of a strong tune, meaning the likes of Nothing That Has Happened… and Music to Walk Home By linger long in the memory.
