Frescobaldi: Toccatas and Partitas – review

Fabio Bonizzoni brings Frescobaldi's toccatas and partitas to colourful life, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Who said that the harpsichord was not expressive? Under the nimble fingers of Fabio Bonizzoni, sonorously recorded, this copy of a 1694 instrument resonates with colour and warmth. Frescobaldi's two books of zany, quasi-improvised toccatas and partitas are here recorded complete, but I wonder whether it was wise to stick to the published order – the more extended variations could have been placed among the toccatas to give more variety. The big surprise comes in the second book, with seven superb pieces for organ, played on an original 1565 instrument in Mantua whose non-well-tempered tuning has to be heard to be believed.
