Piazzolla, Rota, De Falla: Basso Bailando – review

Rick Stotijn and friends provide a rare showcase for the double bass with mixed results, finds Nicholas Kenyon

The double bass has had a chequered career as a solo instrument since Giovanni Bottesini's triumphs in the 19th century. Here, the Dutch bass player Rick Stotijn brings his evident virtuosity at the bottom of the register to bear on three diverse pieces. The only original double bass concerto is Nino Rota's Divertimento concertante, derivative in its language but great fun in its feisty execution. In Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, terrific music originally scored for Piazzolla's tango quintet, Stotijn tries with intermittent success to transfer the composer's distinctive textures to the grumbling bass, while De Falla's Six Spanish Popular Songs, with the bass taking the soprano line with harp, is just bizarre!
