The Cobbler’s Waltz review – Warren Vaché and Alan Barnes combine brilliantly

The blend of Vaché's cornet and Barnes's saxophones and clarinet is perfect throughout, writes Dave Gelly

These two are like brothers – each, in Vaché's words, "playing Jeeves to the other's Bertie". Their playing together bubbles with animation and good humour, ideas passing between them like snappy dialogue. Both are phenomenal players, Vaché on cornet and Barnes on saxophones and clarinet, but it's what they play, not how brilliantly they play it, that keeps you listening. Their solos evolve like extended melodies and the blend of the two instruments is perfect throughout. Vaché's title tune sounds to me like an instant standard. The rhythm section is the unbeatable A-team of John Pearce, Dave Green and Steve Brown.
