Thee Oh Sees: Drop review – ‘cheerily psychedelic’

The eighth studio record from this niche but alluring band fairly scampers along, writes Kitty Empire

Garage rock can get a little one-dimensional. Thee Oh Sees are not that way inclined, infusing their records with a wriggling, lysergic edge. Fans of this niche but alluring outfit assumed that they were over last year when main man John Dwyer relocated from San Francisco to LA. Instead, they have released an eighth studio record as Thee Oh Sees (Dwyer's put out plenty more). Recorded in a banana ripening warehouse, Drop is even more cheerily psychedelic than usual. Opener Penetrating Eye is the best sort of bad trip, with a churning riff Jack White would envy. Encrypted Bounce, meanwhile, recalls Sonic Youth at their most user-friendly. For all their wiggy sonics, Thee Oh Sees rarely lose their way, and these nine tracks scamper along, unfettered by genre hang-ups and aided by guest guitarist Mikal Cronin.
