That’s It! review – New Orleans’s Preservation Hall Jazz Band know not to change a thing

The old ones are the best ones could be the motto of these New Orleans veterans – and that's just as it should be, says Dave Gelly

Founded in 1961 as a platform for veteran New Orleans musicians, Preservation Hall bears nightly witness to the city's unique musical tradition, constantly changing but ever the same. Although the pioneers are long gone, today's band produce the same rolling pulse and free-floating melody lines. These 11 numbers, recorded on the spot, are billed as new compositions, but they're chock-full of venerable phrases and age-old licks – which is just as well. Sometimes, it all verges on a shambles, but an amiable one, like the finale of a Fats Domino show. Good to know everything is still as it should be.
