Lifestories review – Jim Mullen’s thumb-plucking continues to seduce

Guitarist Jim Mullen puts his own gentle spin on Morricone, Sting and Charlie Chaplin, writes Dave Gelly

What is it that makes Jim Mullen's guitar playing so endlessly attractive? Partly, I suppose, it's that unique soft-edged sound, the result of plucking the stings with his thumb, rather than a plectrum. But there's also his way of turning a tune – any tune – this way and that to reveal unexpected beauties. He does it here with pieces by, among others, Wayne Shorter, Ennio Morricone, Django Reinhardt, Sting and even Charlie Chaplin. There's an easy, no-pressure atmosphere about this whole session, recorded in southern Italy with pianist Julian Mazzariello, bassist Dario Deidda and drummer Enzo Zirilli.
