The Sound of Jay & Kai review – Mark Nightingale and Alistair White are the technical equals of the 50s masters

The trombone duo pay tribute with tunes from the 50s virtuoso pairing of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, writes Dave Gelly

This pair of top British trombonists are too young to have heard the original virtuoso duo of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding live, but not only have they got the sound off to a tee, they are technically the equal of the 50s masters. Some of the tunes are from the original repertoire, complete with sneaky key changes, and some are their own slippery, witty arrangements. Jay and Kai were hugely popular with concert and festival audiences in their day. To experience this unique, breezy music in person would be a real treat.
