Hot Natured: Different Sides of the Sun – review

Blissed-out sounds beguile early on in this collection of dance tracks, but it fades to become something more indistinct, writes Paul MacInnes

Shared enthusiasm for classic house … Hot Natured Photograph: PR

A dance supergroup might seem an unusual concept, seeing as any of the individuals who comprise it would be capable of making the music entirely by themselves. Hot Natured – Jamie Jones, Ali Love, Lee Foss, and Luca C, four DJ/producers whose debut gig together sold out London's Brixton Academy – is therefore more of a shared enthusiasm, one for the sounds of classic, balearic-influenced house. This collection beguiles early on: Isis, Reverse Skydiving and Benediction all ride along powerful grooves, escorted by Sun Ra-like lyrics about magic carpet rides to pyramids in the sky. There's a relaxed charm to these songs, making that old phrase "blissed out" feel comprehensible again. The feeling dissipates, though: over the course of a mammoth 15 tracks, the music retires and slips into something more indistinct. By the end, the album unenlivened even by an appearance from the normally reliably spacy Roisin Murphy, you find yourself a bit like Hot Natured themselves: nostalgic for the recent past.
